Husband and Son Number One were watching Signs on cable earlier and now they have CSI on. I have no idea whats going on in either one, but the music has me totally creeped out here in the next room. I think I should pop in a CD or something so I don’t have nightmares.

Thursday, November 20th, 2003“Star Wars Kid” lawsuit
Wednesday, November 19th, 2003I’m not quite sure what to make of this:
Wired News: Star Wars Kid Files Lawsuit.
I always thought the kid posted on the internet himself, and was kind of in on the joke. If he didn’t, as the parents are alleging in their suit, it really does put a different spin on it, and I feel bad for him.

Ian Anderson apologizes
Tuesday, November 18th, 2003In a posting on Jethro Tull’s Web site, Ian Anderson further explained what he meant when he told the Asbury Park Press, “I hate to see the American flag hanging out of every bloody station wagon, out of every SUV, every little Midwestern house in some residential area.”
Anderson said his concern wasn’t specifically displays of the U.S. flag, but “the flag-waving mind-set” across the world.
From Stars, Stripes, and Union Jacks - The Official Jethro Tull Website:
If they hate us so bad, well thats their problem, surely cant be the rational answer. It is our problem too. We are all neighbours on planet Earth and, for better or for worse, we have to learn to get on with each other one day pretty damn soon.
Patriotism is the good guy: fraternal, supportive, the paying of respects particularly in the face of adversity. Space shuttle disasters. 9/11. Commemorative anniversaries. Flags are great.
Nationalism is the bad guy: protectionist, isolationist, triumphalist, buccaneering. Flags seen in this context are, I maintain, likely to be resented.
Sometimes, I suggest, we should perhaps just venture out into the world waving a smile and a handshake (or elbow) and let our character and dignity do the talking.

So called patriots took offense because Mr. Anderson expressed his opinion about the mindset of, well, those so-called patriots.
The whole point of this nation’s existance is freedom of speech, religion, thought, ideas. When people say what they really think and then are pressured to apologize by economic or other bully tactics, well, I have a problem with that.

It’s official- Turkeys are Stupid
Monday, November 17th, 2003Turkeys have a reputation for stupidity, and Neal allows that much of the intelligence had been bred out of them as the industry aimed for ever-larger birds. He also suggests that a reason they may seem dumb is their farsightedness, which makes it hard for them to see and react to anything up close.
“There are no Nobel Prize winners here,” he said. “But they know what they have to know: Where’s the food, where’s the water, where’s the shelter, who’s a he, who’s a she.”
