I got things done today. Yes, that’s news. Because for the past couple of weeks I’ve pretty much done what I used to do at my last paid job- I made like I was really busy but accomplished nothing.
But Time magazine spanked me with the latest issue- a HUGE section in there about making better use of your time and life.
At least now I know I’m not alone.
So I read the Time articles and decided today I was going to actually cross things off my todo list (and not things I add on there because they’re easy to cross off like “brush teeth.” In fact the first thing I decided to do was… make a new todo list! And it’s a long sucker. I really do have a lot to do.
So today, once the list was made, I did all the laundry in the house (that includes the piles of sheets and towels I’d been putting off.) I cleaned the kitchen & both bathrooms (although the main bath was just a wipe down because it’s in the midst of rehab, and just not worth getting anal (uh, maybe a poor word choice there?) about.
I straightened and dusted all the main rooms of the house. I stopped short of vacuuming- that I leave for the kids so they don’t get spoiled.
I clipped all the coupons from 3 weeks worth of Sunday inserts in my latest bid to save money on food (I dicovered that I spend an obscene amount of money on food. I had no idea that families of 5 could live on less than $250 a week! Yes that’s an exaggeration, a small one.)
That took care of the housewifery portion of the list.
I balanced the books for the two organizations I’m treasurer for this year. I had it organized already in that I knew where everything was. But if I won the lottery and skipped town no one else would have been able to figure it out, and they’d suspect that I skipped town because I stole, when in fact I was just being lazy.
I emailed back and forth a few times with people on a committee with me, and got some questions answered.
That took care of the community service.
I went through my budget for the next week (that’s one thing I had done already, made a budget for this year) and shoved money from category to category until I was satisfied that I won’t overspend.
I read a few articles online about financing college (eek!)
I did some research on personal investing.
And the finance manager side of me was satisfied for today.
I picked up oldest son at the bowling alley after practice.
I oversaw the middle son getting ready for a weekend camp out with the Boy Scouts (it’s like he became a teenager and his brain shut down… sheesh.)
I managed to convince youngest son to read a book (since he’s managed to have most other activities banned over the course of the past week.)
Mom’s done. Well, no, mom’s never done.
I secretly snickered at my super type-A husband desperately trying to get ahold of the building contractor who was supposed to stop by this afternoon (husband is type-A but normally manages to keep it in check- and contractor just lost track of the time and finally showed up THANK GOD!)
Wifely duties done. Yes, that’s it for today dear, no more wifely duties. Nope, sorry. Talk to me next week.
I made salmon steaks on the George Forman grill (which I also slammed onto my thumb, which is still throbbing.)
Chef annie fin.
And now, I blog.
Hopefully this means I’m out of my lazy rut. I certainly still have enough things left on that todo list.
I did a couple of loads of laundry and caught up in my checkbook and paid some bills and rocked babies at MOPS. Still, I probably wasted a good four hours or more of the day. Keep us posted and maybe I’ll really get inspired!
Meanwhile, I’ll go see if those Time articles are online.
To Do lists are great for giving a feeling of accomplishment. At least for me they do. Have fun and let us know how it all goes.
